In 2018, Instagram shocked us all when it released ‘IGTV’, a video hub for longer video contents. Nearly 2 years after its launch, IGTV has somehow become popular amongst the app’s younger audience and creators. With its growing popularity and superior engagement rates, Instagram has decided to push this feature to the next level:  Monetization.

So what do you need to know about IGTV monetization?

On the 7th of February, engineering expert ‘Jane Manchun Wong‘ posted as screenshot, revealing Instagram’s monetization program for IGTV creators. According to the screenshot,

“You can earn money by running short ads on your IGTV videos. When you monetize on IGTV, you agree to follow the Partner Program Monetization Policies.”

Many experts have cited this move to be Instagram’s way of luring top creators to the app. Because prior to this development, the lack of monetization tools have been a significant factor as to why IGTV wasn’t a bigger hit. However, with monetization in the picture, influencers could embrace IGTV as an additional stream of income.

As expected, there will be some sort of eligibility restriction put in place by Instagram. But what these thresholds are, is yet to be revealed. Some users have suggested that requirements could be 10,000 followers or a verified account. This way, Instagram can set some markers to maintain content quality.

Commenting on the new update, Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri stated that IGTV is growing hence why Instagram is moving on to the next phase.

But what does this mean for you as a business owner? Well, it’s up to you to decide if you want to run ads on your IGTV. You need to decide what your goals for IGTV are and how they fit into your Instagram strategy. You also need to decide if you want to monetize your Instagram account either through the native app or IGTV.
